Levant

Food, Clinic on Wheels and Education

In the depressing overall situation in the Levant, the inhabitants of the entire region are largely alone in their suffering. A great sense of hopelessness has spread. Many have left their homeland due to wars or the lack of opportunities. Particularly affected are those who were already part of the suffering population. The war in Gaza and the resulting regional tensions are once again putting the region to the test.

In view of these disconcerting social, economic, and safety-related developments in the Levant, SwissRelief aims to provide signs of hope with its projects. Whilst considering their degree of need, every year more than a thousand households (mainly families of widows and single mothers) receive vital, regular food aid. A clinic on wheels which SwissRelief supports has become an important point of contact since the COVID-19 pandemic for people in the many undersupplied villages and temporary refugee settlements among the Kurdish minority. During the lockdowns, this regular service even became lifesaving for some of the sick. More than 5000 people can be treated in one year, some of whom likely would not survive without this emergency aid. As far as the security situation permits, SwissRelief also supports educational programs for women, young people and children from refugee families who would not have access to education otherwise.

To counteract the despondency and emigration and give people perspectives within their own country – that is the aim of the SwissRelief projects.
